Today, at band camp, er?, I mean at the blackberry briar patch, I concentrated more on picking berries, and less on taking pictures.

My long arms can reach plenty-enough large juicy blackberries to fill a bucket quickly. Jan figured she might benefit by using a 'grabber' (extend-a-reach?) to pull the briars down to her level. That was not a great success, but she did develop a talent for picking high berries with a soft touch using the tool!
It's an annual sequence I go through - trying to increase endurance by making each ride a bit longer than the last. I had 2 goals in mind when I left home today. I wanted to have some good looks at the state of construction of the Trans-Canada Highway/McKensie Avenue interchange, and I wanted to pedal as far as Atkins Station. Both goal achieved! Plus I got to eat ripe blackberries off the bushes, and photograph wildflowers along the trail.
Still waiting for the Government/Wharf streets bike lanes to open. White plastic sheath covers ongoing repairs to the Bay Street Bridge. Looks like a new toilet block being built at the Blenkinsop Connector station. (YAY) Sampled a few blackberries before heading home. Picked up Jan & we drove to QF for cheap lunch - today the $5 specials included a bacon-wrapped chili-dog with onion-rings, or poutine!
We drive the scenic route by McNeill Bay quite often, but it is not very often that there is no one in the big lawn chairs set on the rocks looking out to Trial Island & beyond to the Olympic Mountains. I burned a u-ey and parked so we could have a turn. We only had to share with Canada gees & a pair of black oystercatchers.
Deuce Days is a four day event, but thing get really REAL on Sunday. That's when inner harbour streets are tuned into parking lots for over 1300 very special vehicles. For one thing, they are all older than me!!
The weather was fine and the crowds were huge. A poem. (?)
A whale watching boat waiting for customers from 3 cruise ships. The Coho with snow-capped Olympic Mountains in the background. How not to wear a personal flotation device. Jan made chicken salad sandwiches & I contributed a travel thermos of Chicken-in-A-Mug. We drove up to Island View Beach to enjoy the scenery while we lunched.
Jan bought some purple beans at Michell Farms, and while she selected corn on the cob from Silver Rill I photographed rusty arm equipment. The Friday evening Ogden Point cruise ships and breakwater barge party always amuse me. |
