Today is the day we start the next down-under adventure. What better than to spend some sunny warm hours on Esquimalt Lagoon Beach before heading to YYJ for the small hop over the Gulf Islands to Vancouver. Then on to New Zealand and Australia. Lunch at La Belle Patate in Esquimalt was Breakfast Poutine: hot potato chips/fries, beef gravy, cheese curd with crispy fried bacon & sunny side up eggs! (burrrrp)
A bit of the afternoon was enjoyed at Saxe Point - soaking up glorious 20 degree sunshine. Now home finishing packing & house organizing before the big travel day tomorrow. For Jan's birthday lunch today tried Moon Under Water Brew Pub (aka the Moon). Again marvel at the high quality of pub food in our pretty little city!
Peas & yellow raspberries are still going strong at Marsh Farms. Cloudy but calm on the water today. Last chance for us to have breakfast at the Jam for a while.
Smiley-face and a full belly on the way out. The maples and oak leaves are turning to shades of yellow/orange/red, but friends & locals have educated me about our 'autumn crocus'. Google or Wiki it - I did!
My bike & I shared the road with a couple of urban deer this afternoon. Monkey puzzle trees are not native or abundant here, but I found a prime one with seed cones. Temporary art. Part of me gets it. Part of me does not. Creativity. Talent. Expression. Time & effort to create something special then some pictures are taken, and the original artwork is gone almost immediately. This, and sand sculpting are SO fleeting. And, yes, I am totally jealous of those with the talent to do these things!
Alright, it is probably a coincidence that along with the chalk artists downtown, there are some HUGE yachts docked in the inner harbour this weekend. I did not want to give up on this superb weather day, so, after the downtown walk I rode the bike out to Galey Farm. That's where the Sphinx in the field is located. Most excellent! This is what I call a "BOSS DAY!" Finally made it to the Royal BC Museum to see the Vikings exhibition. Busy, but good to see. Also did a uick tour of the other, permanent galleries.
The museum is also hosting a huge 3D chalk art project as part of our international festival (more on that another day). In the neighbrhood: local rugby, spiders that remind me of Australia, and a very bushy-tailed squirrel. Cruise ship watching.
Avoid crowds - shop Target Canada! Better yet, visit the historic Emily Carr house. Rifflandia music festival: many bands over multiple venues over 3 days. The free concerts in Beacon Hill Park are still happening, too. Drove up to Duncan (again!), this time to pick up a new printer at Future Shop. The Doghouse Restaurant has been here for decades, and several people have recommended we eat here. Today we finally did. No regrets!
Dropped the car off for servicing this morning. Walked to Shine Cafe for beakie - good, tasty food, large portions, and multimedia art on the walls.
Picked up the car, dropped it off at home & walked back downtown. Darned if we didn't get hungry again by mid-afternoon! Donair for me & moussaka for Jan at the Fresko Cafe in Lo-Jo fit the bill. Orca mom & calf are looking fine at this time of year! |
