Later, at YYJ, admired a Pacific Coast plane with a lumberjack image to the tail fin.
I will be switching over the my OzAgain blog to post my observations from Australia. See you on the other side.

Walked the breakwater walk & then to downtown. Tried a new coffee/pastry shop on Laurel Point.

After our breakwater lighthouse stroll we went downtown to confirm reports of trees in bloom on View Street.
It started with a fairly normal breakwater walk. The barge bilge has drained for days & is floating higher than we have ever seen it. A young angler caught a ling-cod, which was released.
Then our walk became a little outside our normal: We went into the James Bay location of Floyd's Diner to support the local hot chocolate festival. In a moment of weakness we also ordered a plate of cinnamon pancakes. Shared, of course! Sunday morning walk to the E&N Rail Trail in Esquimalt. Lots of new spray-paint art on the buildings.
Then a quiet walk around The Gorge. Lunch was at Finest at Sea in James Bay. Evening drive to Cattle Point for a Mount Baker sunset. Supper was at Prairie Inn in Saanichton. The breakwater highlight for me was finding a yellow sea slug (nudibranch) right where I was told it was! No great pics due to depth of water & surface ripples, but it seves as proof of sighting. Some downtown outdoor artworks north of the Johnson Street Bridge & the new Janion buildings. Lunch at JBI. Oh, look! Daffodils!!!! Visitors from Calgary getting re-acquainted with our usual places of interest. Breakwater, Dallas Road, and Beacon Hill Park.
We did our usual walk to the lighthouse. One waterfowl with a weird looking beak might be an auklet (puffin family). Probably the same hummer as yesterday entertained us for a minute. We drove out to Elk/Beaver Lake to walk a few of the 10 kms loop trail. Chinese New Year display at Mayfair Mall. Sporadic gust whipped salt spray onto us as we went on our walk to the lighthouse. No-one was parked in front of the building murals at our industrial park grocery warehouse.
I have added month end stats to my usual step count & map. Otters being otters. I'm not sure what they were feeding on, but for a change they seemed alright with sharing. Harbour seals were behaving strangely, staying very close to the blocks of the breakwater. We suspect they were trying not to be noticed by some unseen predator in the area. That usually means Orca, but we could not see any sign of them. A hummingbird was displaying nicely. Perhaps it is Spring around here!?! This month we have had record low temperatures, snow events, and now record high temperatures. It was so nice today that I hand washed the car!
We almost didn't get out of the house in time for sunup today. Fortunately, the colours lasted a good, long time.
Later, after driving to Cattle Point, we got a pretty good view of most of Mount Baker behind a cargo ship, and the Olympic range behind the municipality of Oak Bay. |
