Lovely walk at Government House after our breakwater walk. Flowers, wildlife, birds, food, +, +, +!

We took Fran on a walk through our local James Bay Market, & around the Legislative Buildings grounds. Wound up at the inner harbour just in time to watch the Coho ferry depart, bound for Port Angeles, WA, USA, and the (world famous) water taxi ballet. Fran & Jan & I walked a bit of the Songees side of the harbour. Good little video of a float-plane taking off around the Coho ferry. Favourite poutine take-away to a favourite picnic table. Bonus entertainment was turkey-vultures circling & landing on the pier pilings. Took our visitor from Alberta on a Tower walk. I think she was impressed.
I know we all liked lunch at Green Leaf in Duncan. Breakwater walk featuring a sleek boat, chunky starfish, & kelps in currents. Beacon Hill Park walk featuring the rose garden, Great Blue Herons nesting season, and diversity on the turtle log. Later, we picked up Fran at YYJ. Scenic drive home included a stop at the top of Mount Tolmie. See the cruise ships parked in front of our place?!? There is an area in Esquimalt, near the Navy base, along the E&N Rail Trail, that I have been keeping my eye on while riding my bike. Although it is early in the season, I reckoned we should come back with the car & berry baskets to see how the blackberry crop was doing. This area immediately became our new go-to place to pick! We have not had a rainy day in a long while, but we got wet walking today. Several times, as we met Cathy & Joyce at Fathom for refreshments. They were on a day-stop on an Alaska cruise.
The neighbours are serious about selling - the signs are up today. A ship-shipping ship is parked by the breakwater this morning. Bike ride up the Goose to the Royal Roads turn-off (about 40 km total peddle). Judging by the bramble patch at Atkins Station, it is looking like a bumper crop of wild blackberries is on its way. I heard, then saw an ice-cream truck from our kitchen window. The fog bank at the base of the Olympic Peninsula is massive this morning. Ghost ships? One of our pilot boats motors out to meet one of the passing freighters. We had a flight of a float -plane over the lighthouse, and later, a flight of a heron landing beside the breakwater. |
